MSTSD designed this headquarters for Southern Company, the second largest utility company in the United States in terms of customer base, to reflect attributes of the historic power plant buildings in Southern Company’s history. The most prominent corner of the building is designed as a lantern as a reinterpretation of past Atlanta street lights powered by Southern Company. This Class A building connects the corporate culture of Southern Company with the building, creating a sense of place. The building’s skin is composed of polished granite panels set in a curtain wall with floor-to-ceiling vision glass. A thirty two foot high lobby, looks out toward the pedestrian corridor. The lobby utilizes a palette of timeless materials which include polished granite floors and walls with book-matched wood veneer columns and a vaulted ceiling. Two major art pieces were commissioned for the project. This highly visible and landmark facility is 264,853 square feet and is 14-stories constructed on top of a seven-level parking structure. Retail shops and a French restaurant are designed to create a vibrant street level component. The the facility additionally contains a company fitness center.
